Safe Medical Termination of Pregnancy

A medical termination of pregnancy or abortion refers to pregnancy termination process done due to certain circumstances by nonsurgical procedures. These are performed in the initial stages of pregnancy, specifically before the completion of 7 weeks of conception.
The procedure involves removal of the pregnancy tissues by administering drugs to terminate the unwanted pregnancy. The procedure can be conducted within a day and do not require a long recovery period of hospital stay. Abortion can be either done medically with the help of pills or by surgical procedures during the period of 9 weeks to 20 weeks.

Medical termination of pregnancy in India
The period of pregnancy is counted from first day of the last periods of the woman before conceiving.  Though the World Health Organisation (WHO) has approved medical abortion or MTP till 9 weeks of pregnancy, the law in India approves MTP only till 7 weeks or 49 days of pregnancy. However, abortion can be done with the recommendation of doctors up to 20 weeks of pregnancy in India.
Medical Abortion Procedure
The procedure associated with the medical termination of pregnancy (abortion in Mumbai) involves oral administration of mifepristone tablets initially. Misoprostol tablets are then administered through oral, sublingual, buccal or vaginal means. The vaginal administration is found to be more effective with very low risks of side effects.
The procedure can be done in a single day and do not require hospitalisation. However, if complication like persistent bleeding, fever lasting over 24 hours, general discomfort and so on are evident, medical attention is needed. For pregnancies over 7 weeks of conception a combination of medical and surgical abortion is performed.
Benefits of Medical Abortion
Medical abortion is a relatively simpler process when compared to its surgical counterpart. The benefits of this procedure are as follows.
  • Do not require an invasive procedure
  • Can be manged at home with proper motivation and counselling
  • Does not require hospitalisation
  • Bleeding can be well controlled with menstrual pads.
